Ebele called after they received the money transfer. “Imeela. I’m grateful,” she said.

Her sister could not understand the cost of her gift. “The best way you can show me your gratitude is to pass with flying colours.”

“I will do my best. Eh hen. Yesterday, I saw Immaculata. She said you’ve forgotten about her.”

Zina pursed her lips. Her last conversation with Immaculata ended on a sour note. Immaculata became angry when Zina said she could not buy the requested designer shoes.

Even though Eziafa was not home, Zina lowered her voice. “When was the last time you saw Ndu?”

“He is currently in Oji. Something bad happened.”

“What?”

“A month ago, they brought him home with two broken legs.”

Zina jumped from her seat. “He was in a motor accident?”

“No. Some confra boys gave him a serious beating. They’re saying Ndu must have offended someone.”

Zina blinked back her tears. Ndu was too outspoken. It was a dangerous personality trait for someone who had no godfathers to fight his battles.

“Mama wants to talk to you,” Ebele said.

“Okay.”

Zina heard her mother’s voice. “Why were you asking about that boy?”

“Mama, I don’t understand,” she said.

“See this child. I know you and your sister were talking about Ndu. How many people in Oji have two broken legs? Zinachidi, face your front. Remember Lot’s wife.”

She wasn’t going to turn into a pillar of salt. “Is it wrong to ask after a childhood friend?”

Her mother gave a mirthless laugh. “You think I did not know about the two of you? Ndu’s mother told me about his interest. I told them to wait until Ndu had finished school and had a job. Listen, you are now a married woman. Let today be the last time you ask after that boy.”

“Yes, Mama.”
